“Life can either be accepted or changed. If it is not accepted, it must be changed. If it cannot be changed, then it must be accepted.” –Author unknown

I find this quote to be both true, and in sense, uplifting. There are so many things that are within our power, and just as many that are beyond it. What this quote emphasizes for me is that life requires individual responsibility, a sense of freedom to make your own choices, and an understanding of human limitations.

No one is perfect, but each person is truly capable of positive change. One thing that often stifles change, getting in the way of optimism, is feeling overwhelmed and taking on unnecessary responsibility for things beyond one’s control.

If you find yourself feeling bogged down, stressed, depressed, anxious or even “stuck,” I urge you to make a list of three things that are within your control and three things beyond your control. For example, a job seeker can control how many jobs they apply to, but can’t control the state of the economy. One can control his/her outlook on life, but not the opinions of others.

Take some weight off of your shoulders, focus on the changeable and obtainable. Breathe, be brave. Find the courage to make positive changes where possible, and accept the things that are out of your power.

Why Do I Need Self Care?
With life’s daily stressors and weighty demands, it can be hard at times to find the time to relax and take care of yourself. Family, work, financial and social obligations play important life fulfilling roles, but can often cause a person to feel spread too thin. Overextending yourself without taking time for sufficient self care can lead to increased stress and anxiety, and can negatively impact emotional and physical wellbeing. Some people may argue that self care is selfish, however, studies show that good self care prevents feelings of burnout, and can increase the quality of care given to others. Self care is essential for stress management, can help build feelings of emotional well being and increase self-esteem.
There are many ways to take time out and treat yourself without spending money, such as going for a walk, meditating alone in a quiet room, taking a scenic drive, giving yourself a manicure or pedicure, soaking in a warm bath, listening to enjoyable music, and taking a nap. Self care also includes eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and making sure to get enough sleep each night. Remember that putting yourself first a few minutes a day is necessary to be at your best, and each of us deserve rest, relaxation, and a little bit of peace.

“Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.” – Aristotle

I believe Aristotle is right, that happiness is essential in life, and furthermore, laughter truly is some of the best medicine. As they say, life is short, and happiness makes life unforgettable. One person’s concept of happiness may be contrary to another, as happiness varies by individual and cultural definitions. While some define financial stability and career success as the elements needed for a life of happiness, others feel friends, family, and meaningful relationships mean the most.

Regardless of individual definition of the term, happiness is a feeling that each person, regardless of race, religion, gender, country of origin, circumstance and past experience, is entitled to in life. Experiences dealing with grief, loss, fear, guilt, depression, anxiety, codependence, anger, resentment, and shame all have the power to make happiness seem like something out of reach, and as humans, we all feel these kinds of emotions during various times in life. During times like these, it’s important to remember the things that make each of us smile, that lift our hearts and mend our souls. Happiness is life’s greatest gift, and it’s deserved by all.
